This is the among the first bowls I've turned out of wax myrtle, which happens to be a very interesting wood. According to the US Forestry Depertmet it grows from the Florida Keys all the way up the east coast as far as Maryland. It's found growing wild in a variety of ecosystems and it is popular as an ornamental hedge plant. There's tons more interesting stuff but this is shopping time not Botany class.
The wood for this little live edge bowl came from our family ranch. There are a good amount of wax myrtles growing there and sometimes a branch or whole tree dies or we lose one when new firebreaks are cut. That's how I came into possession of this piece of wood ... fire prevention. (Just got the nod of approval from Smokey the Bear.)
This particular bowl was once the crotch where two branches met. As a result there is a fantastic bark inclusion on one side. The wood has lovely grain patterns which don't really show up in the pictures as I'd hoped. For the size bowl it is, it's pretty deep so it has the potential to be useful as well as decorative. I guestimate it would hold $10 worth of pennies. Make of that what you will.
