Drunken Norfolk Pine
Wood: Norfolk Pine
Dimensions: Measures 6 3/4 inches wide and stands almost 3 1/2 inches tall
Finish: Danish Oil
For Indoor Use Only; Not For Use With Food
Hurricane Irma knocked down this Norfolk Pine tree. Whoever had the tree cut it into manageable sized logs and piled them neatly at the curb for trash pick up. As luck would have it I drove past that lovely pile of logs before the trash guys got there.
This is a handy bowl, wide enough to hold my sunglasses. It's also deep enough to hold my keys. If functionality isn't what you're looking for this bowl would nicely display a collection treasures.
I call this piece "drunken" because of the way I applied the finish. The bowl soaked in a bucket of Danish Oil for about a week. During that time the finish soaked deep into the fibers of the wood. Wood that has soaked ends up with different colors and texture than wood that has had the finish applied only to the top. The effect is slightly translucent and the colors are rich. After all that soaking it takes at least another week, sometimes as much as a month, for the piece to dry.
There is a divot on one side, as shown in the last photo. This divot is what is left of a chainsaw mark. If you find this variety of personality quirk unattractive, then head back to the 'Products' page and check out the other bowls becasue this isn't the one for you.
