Drunken Aspen Closed Form

Drunken Aspen Closed Form

Wood: Aspen
Dimensions: Measures 4 1/2 inches wide and stands 3 3/4 inches tall
Finish: Danish Oil
For Indoor Use Only

This closed form bowl is made from aspen that once sat in my Aunt and Uncle's firewood pile. Sometimes the greatest bits of wood come from firewood piles. This bit of wood has beautiful knots.

I call this piece "drunken" because of the way I applied the finish. The aspen soaked in a bucket of Danish Oil for about a week. During that time the finish soaked deep into the fibers of the wood. Wood that has soaked ends up with different colors and texture than wood that has had the finish applied only to the top. The effect is slightly translucent and the colors are rich. After all that soaking it takes at least another week, sometimes as much as a month, for the piece to dry.

The opening is rather small (1 1/2 inches), which is how it got the designation 'closed form' in its name. It's not necessarily good for holding things, but its striking colors make it a must have for that place in your home that lacks pop.

The sunglasses in the last photo are for size reference. And I really like my sunglasses. So there's that.
