Hurricane Irma took out the bottle brush trees on the Treasure Island Causeway in Florida. Bottle brush has some great gnarley, thick bark so it took a long time for the wood to dry. Eventually I took my plumb ax, removed the bark and sped up the drying process so I could make these boes.
Bottle brush has little cracks and inclusions in it, which can readily be seen on these boxes. Both were made from the same piece of wood. The color variation comes from the way in which I finished them. The lighter colored box on the left has a clear top coat. The darker colored box on the right has a mineral oil and bee's wax mix that darkened up the wood.
Both boxes are roomy inside and could be used as small bowls without the lids.
