Another Drunken Camphor Bottle Opener
Dimensions: 7 1/4 inches from end to end
Finish: Danish Oil
At my in-law's house there grows a camphor tree. It's a lovely little tree but, sadly, it seems to be nearing the end of it's lifespan. The smaller limbs frequently break off in storms and the larger limbs often need the dead wood purned. Happily the wood is just right for turning and it is BEAUTIFUL inside. The light wood has lots of red knots and swirls.
I call this opener "drunken" because of the way I applied the finish. The camphor soaked in a bucket of Danish Oil for about a week. During that time the finish soaked deep into the fibers of the wood. Wood that has soaked this way ends up with different colors and texture than wood that has had the finish applied only to the top. The colors are more rich and the grain patterns are much more obvious. After all that soaking it takes at least another week, sometimes as much as a month, for the piece to dry.
